چکیده

A 69-year-old man presented with many ticks on both feet. Multiple engorged adult ticks were observed on his soles (Fig. 1). Larvae, nymphs, adults and nymph exuviae were seen on the dorsum of both feet, and the patient had elongated toenails (Fig. 2). The patient suffered a brain infarction 14 years ago. Since his wife died a year before, and his pet dog died soon after, he became seriously depressed and lost the will to live. The ticks were identified as brown dog ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Three developmental stages of R. sanguineus were identified: larvae, nymphs, and adults. R. sanguineus is one of the most widespread ticks in the world and has great medical and veterinary significance because it is a vector and reservoir of many human and animal pathogens (e.g., Coxiella burnetii, Ehrlichia canis, Rickettsia conorii, and Rickettsia rickettsii). The domestic dog is the main host of R. sanguineus [1,2]. A few cases of human parasitism by R. sanguineus ticks have been described in literatures [3,4]. Recent studies have shown that R. sanguineus ticks exposed to high temperatures are more prone to bite humans. This scenario

Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae), the brown dog tick, parasitizing humans in Brazil.

The objective of this paper is to describe four cases of human parasitism by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latrielle) in Brazil. During an investigation regarding the species of ectoparasites of domestic dogs from the metropolitan region of Recife, Pernambuco state, four dog owners were found to be parasitized by ticks. The ticks were collected from these individuals and their dogs. All the ticks w...

Molecular Prevalence of Hepatozoon canis Infection in Dog Tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, from Punjab, India

Canine hepatozoonosis, caused by Hepatozoon canis, is transmitted by the ingestion of brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In the present study R. sanguineus ticks (n=60) collected from dogs presented at Small Animal Clinics, Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, GADVASU, Ludhiana, Punjab, India were screened by PCR based assay for the detection of H. canis specific 18S ribosomal RNA gene ...

Nymphs of the ixodid tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus were found naturally infected by the tiny wasp Ixodiphagus hookeri. The parasitism resulted in the death of the host ticks, as cause of ingestion o...

Detection of Ehrlichia platys DNA in brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) in Okinawa Island, Japan.

Thirty-two Rhipicephalus sanguineus females collected from eight free-roaming dogs in Okinawa Island, Japan, were examined for ehrlichial DNA by 16S rRNA-based PCR and subsequent sequencing. Partial sequences of Ehrlichia platys 16S rRNA (678 to 679 bp) were detected in three ticks (9.4%) from two dogs. This is the first report of detection of E. platys in Japan, and also the first report of de...

Complete Mitochondrial Genome Sequence Data Provides Genetic Evidence That the Brown Dog Tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) Represents a Species Complex

Ticks are blood-sucking ectoparasites of great medical and veterinary significance that can transmit bacteria, protozoa, fungi and viruses, and cause a variety of human and animal diseases worldwide. In the present study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of Rhipicephalus sanguineus from China (RSC) and compared with that of R. sanguineus from USA (RSU). Nucleotide sequence di...
